On March 19th, SLC Cornwall hosted its inaugural Iftar at the Innovation Hub, marking a significant moment for the community to come together in celebration of Ramadan. This heartwarming event allowed students and employees to share in the spirit of unity and mutual respect.
Carmen Law, the Director of Belonging, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion at SLC, was instrumental in enabling me to turn this initiative into a reality through her generous support. A dedicated team of volunteers, including Chaimaa Nassah, Musharraful Islam Shahid, Giddafi, and Mosammat Meherunnessa, worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the event's success, from meticulous planning to execution. The delicious catering from Brown's added to the evening's enjoyment, creating a warm atmosphere for all participants.
Attendees included Muslim students and esteemed faculty members such as Oday Aswad, Dr. Majed Mouazen, Ziad Ewais, Muhammad Owais Aziz, Denise Nielsen, Ann Small, Jennifer Haley, and Councillor Sarah Good. Their presence enriched the experience, showcasing support for the values that Ramadan represents.
Ramadan imparts profound lessons in charity, kindness, and empathy. Celebrating these values fosters a sense of belonging and understanding, essential for cultivating an inclusive and diverse community. The benefits of inclusivity enhance individual experiences and invite appreciation for the richness of various cultures and beliefs. This event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of coming together to create a more compassionate and harmonious environment for everyone.
