A collaborative simulation exercise between the Personal Support Worker (PSW) and Paramedic programs provided students with hands-on experience in patient care and interdisciplinary teamwork. The event allowed PSW and paramedic students to practice their respective roles in a realistic, non-critical medical scenario.

The exercise centered on a simulated patient requiring medical assessment for symptoms such as dizziness or a minor fall. PSW students initiated a 911 call, practiced relaying critical information, and supported paramedics upon their arrival. Paramedic students responded to the call, conducted patient assessments, and determined appropriate care or transport options.

For many participants, the simulation was a valuable opportunity to learn from real-world scenarios. Jacob Deans, a Paramedic student, reflected on the experience: "The joint simulation was an eye-opening experience that gave us valuable insights into the details of how our peers in healthcare are trained and operate."

Similarly, Milven, a PSW student, shared how the exercise highlighted the importance of maintaining composure under pressure: "I can say about the simulation that I became calm. In a real event, I should stay calm so I can assess the situation, review medical records, and ask necessary questions to understand the patient’s condition. Panic can make your mind go blank, preventing you from doing what needs to be done."

Milven also praised the paramedic students’ performance, noting their expertise and preparedness: "The responding paramedic team knew what they were doing. They were equipped with knowledge and tools to handle the scenario and did an excellent job."

The simulation emphasized vital skills, including clear communication, clinical decision-making, and patient-centered care. For PSW students, the focus was on gathering and relaying accurate information to emergency dispatchers. Paramedic students concentrated on conducting efficient assessments and collaborating with PSWs to ensure seamless patient care.
Instructors highlighted the importance of mutual respect and understanding between disciplines. Through teamwork, students developed a deeper appreciation for each other’s roles in healthcare.
