A. Britton Smith Centre for Behavioural Studies

A hub for researchers, faculty, students, behaviour analysts and community service providers.

The A. Britton Smith Centre for Behavioural Studies (CBS) was officially launched in 2013. The Centre is a hub for researchers, faculty, students, behaviour analysts and community service providers to work together to advance the science of behaviour analysis.

Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) applies the principles of learning to help people learn new and socially significant behaviours, or to reduce unwanted behaviours, while simultaneously demonstrating the effectiveness of the intervention through data collection and analysis. The Centre provides a place where experts and students in the field of ABA can work together to advance, mobilize and implement the science of behaviour analysis.

The Centre’s Mandate

The A. Britton Smith Centre for Behavioural Studies aspires to lead in the field of applied behaviour analysis. The Centre is a place where students, faculty, researchers, behaviour analysts and community service providers advance the science of behaviour analysis through education, practical application and collaborative research work.

Goals 2019 - 2024

The following goals create the context and direction for our efforts. Our strategic direction was determined in consultation with staff, faculty and college leadership in the Fall of 2019. These goals and objectives along with our updated mandate help frame our work at CBS, and are connected to the goals outlined in SLC’s Strategic Plan.

The Centre is a space of action learning for students, faculty, staff and community members. We create exciting opportunities to increase the involvement of students and volunteers, as well as continue to innovate our content.

We will create a new vision for our research, which will include the mentoring students and  staff, and develop our research capacity of our faculty and community partners through learning and  expanded professional collaborations.

CBS will create a new communications strategy, which will include targeted communications to future collaborators. Additionally, the committee responsible for informing research and projects will expand its membership to grow our research capacity and cross-departmental collaboration.

CBS will continue to grow its on-line presence with continued communications through our website, social media and newsletters. We will continue to conduct research, write and present , our work at conferences, through video, and other learning platforms.

We will grow the activities and offerings through CBS sustainability and over time. This will come with careful planning, the development of new teaching and learning material, as well as the expansion of our team.
