Artist Statement
I have always been drawn to beautiful shapes, textures, saturated colours, and delicate details. These principles are in my thoughts as I dye or paint fabric for my art, or take photographs for inspiration.
My process includes an idea, some visualizing, maybe some notes or sketches, and an improvised composition. After many revisions, I will eventually arrive at the final design.
There are many enjoyable techniques I like to use when working with a cloth such as printing, eco-dyeing, free motion machine stitching, and hand embroidery. When designing, I think about the feeling of my subject, whether realistic or imagined. I prefer a contemporary style with lots of detail.
Creating textile art is a joyful process. I am inspired by the texture of boulders smoothed by ocean waves, the shape of windblown wildflowers, and the value of close relationships.
I hope my work is an invitation for the viewer to look closely, find a story, perhaps notice something unexpected, and consider what it means to you.
