The Marianne van Silfhout Gallery at St. Lawrence College is pleased to present the fall exhibit, Art Threads: Kingston Fibre Artists Favourite Techniques. The exhibition will be on view from September 30 – December 8, 2023.

This curated exhibit features a selection of artwork by each of the 17 members of the KFA. Works on display showcase a variety of techniques in contemporary textile art making including needle and wet felting, hand and machine stitching or embroidery, photo-transfer, hand-dyed fabrics, collage, wire crochet, and art quilting. Resulting in works that are pictorial, sculptural, free-floating, abstract, or literal.

The Kingston Fibre Artists Group was formed in 1997 by Hilary Scanlon. Their original mandate was to “keep the ancient art of hand embroidery alive and well, explore new techniques, share and learn with each other, and aim for a professional standard of work, including research, record-keeping, presentation and display.”

The group meets monthly and holds annual gallery displays in Kingston, both as a challenge and focus for their work, and to share their creativity with others. KFA has chosen to remain small, inviting new members only to replace those who leave. Because individual styles and interests vary widely, their shows have been described as intellectually stimulating, exciting and artistically strong.

“With the launch of the new Experimental Media: Textiles course in the Visual and Creative Arts diploma program at St. Lawrence College this semester, the timing of this exhibit will provide our students, staff, and the public with an up-close look at the varied medium of textiles and fibre in contemporary art today. We are thrilled to be able to see real examples in the gallery while we introduce this versatile and exciting medium to our students.” - Maureen Sheridan, Program Coordinator Visual and Creative Arts.
