Elementary and secondary school students in Kingston, Brockville, and Cornwall have a hands-on opportunity to experience St. Lawrence College’s (SLC) programs during Connections, a one-day event on campus.

On Wednesday, May 1, Connections 7/8 will be held at SLC on all campuses. Five hundred Grade 7 and 8 students will have opportunities to try out carpentry, computer programming, culinary arts, firefighting, business, automotive, policing, and more.

On Thursday, May 2, 250 Grade 10 and 11 students will participate in one of 16 different programs offered at the Kingston campus. Connections 10/11 exposes secondary students and staff to a variety of college programs through hands-on activities.  Students will choose to participate in programs ranging from Mini Manufacturing, Police Officer, Advertising, Graphic Design, Nursing, Computer Programming, Hairstylist/Esthetician, Cooking, Carpentry, Becoming Money-Smart, Biotechnology, Civil Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, and Instrumentation and Control Engineering.

“Connections opens students’ eyes to SLC programs. We hope that by exposing them to the college and showing them the numerous career pathways, they will consider college as a post-secondary destination,” said Anne Nahorny, School College Work Initiatives (SCWI) coordinator at SLC.

Connections is supported by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities through SCWI and includes students from four area school boards: Algonquin Lakeshore District School Board, Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario, Limestone District School Board, and Upper Canada District School Board.

On Wednesday, May 15, the Cornwall campus will host 150 Grade 10 students from the Cornwall area for a Sampler Day of hands-on activities in the skilled trades (welding, automotive, and carpentry), gaming, and business.
