St. Lawrence College (SLC) students in Cornwall will host a workshop for local farmers and small food producers to help them participate in famer’s markets in order to grow their customer base. The free workshop will take place on Saturday, April 13 from 8:30am to noon at the College’s Cornwall campus.
The workshop was developed by SLC students in the Supply Chain Management and Business programs in collaboration the Cornwall and Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry Food and Agriculture Advisory Council. Attendees will hear from guest speakers on topics such as licensing, insurance, safe food handling, and financing, and will receive a workbook created by the SLC students as a takeaway.
“This project was a great learning experience as it helped me connect to various professionals in their industry which resulted in the sharing of knowledge, thoughts, and opinions,” said Akshay Mehta, a student in the Supply Chain Management program.
The idea for the workshop was born after the Eco Farm Days Convention at the Ramada Inn in Cornwall this past February. SLC students were there to gather information from the industry and worked with faculty Victoria Workman and Carla Kingston-Floyd to develop a workshop to help businesses reach the local market with their produce and products.
