St. Lawrence College students raise thousands of dollars for global charity

St. Lawrence College (SLC) students in the Advertising and Marketing Communications program raised more than $14,000 for charity: water, a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries.

The charity drive was part of the program’s Perspectives of Leadership class, which teaches theories of leadership to help students develop the skills essential to becoming leaders in the workplace, the community, and society.

More than 100 students used several methods to raise funds, including a talent show at St. Larry’s Pub, awareness campaigns on World Water Day, and individual challenges and efforts. One student sold her designer wardrobe, another dyed his hair to raise money, another donated her birthday gift money to the cause.

“It gives us the experience we need while making a difference in people's lives,” said Emily Sebesta, a participating student who planned many of the events.

One of the project’s leaders, Cynthia Bradley, said, “the best thing about this project was the feeling that I had an effect on the world and not just myself, plus I had a lot of fun with my classmates.”

The money raised will be used to fund a clean water source in the developing world. One hundred per cent of funds raised through donations to charity: water go directly to the project. The students are looking forward to seeing the results of their efforts have a real impact on the world. Charity: water provides lifetime updates on the status of the funded project.

“The charity: water project taught me about just how capable I am in using the skills I learned in first year to do something positive and change the world,” said student Alexandra Craig.
