Indigenous Education Council Plans Exciting Initiatives for 2025
The Indigenous Education Council (IEC) is composed of SLC employees, Indigenous representatives from community partners, and Indigenous students and alumni. This diverse group of voices is dedicated to advancing Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being at the College.  Co-chaired by Shannon Hall, Educational Developer – Indigenous Pedagogies, and Amanda Cook, Post-Secondary Coordinator at Iohahi:io Akwesasne Education & Training Institute, the IEC met for its first meeting of 2025 on March 24.
Business Lessons from Wampum
A Business-Accounting class recently took part in a wampum workshop in SLC Cornwall’s Waasaabiidaasamose Indigenous Centre. Wampum, or traditional beads, have been and are used by Indigenous Peoples to record important words and meetings, as a form of an agreement, treaty, or alliance.
Kingston secondary students get hands-on experience at SLC
On March 19 the Recruitment team hosted secondary students from Limestone District School Board’s River Program and Gateway Program on the Kingston campus, giving them a look at life at SLC.  The group enjoyed stump stamping, frame building, and wood burning activities, and were able to take home their creations -- and we discovered artists within the group! Following an electrical demonstration, the students worked in pairs to run and secure wires to switches and lightbulbs.    The students toured campus and learned about many programs and services offered at SLC before spending some time in the Waasaabiidaasamose Indigenous Centre.
